Rental Qualifications

YWCA Madison is Section 42 housing. To qualify to live at the YWCA, an applicant must make under $35,280 and not be a full-time student. Because of YWCA Madison’s low-income housing status, we are required by the federal government to complete an income certification for all residents prior to moving in, and each year that a lease is renewed. To establish low-income status, applicants must bring proof of income, such as check stubs, letters of benefits, etc.

Types of Units

There are two styles of living accommodations:

  • Private, Single Room Occupancy units with shared kitchens and lounges, and

  • Cozy one-bedroom apartments.

Each unit is furnished; however, the YWCA does not supply linens, towels, or cooking ware. Every private room has a small refrigerator, while the apartments have galley kitchens equipped with a stovetop, a microwave, a mid-size refrigerator, and a sink with disposal.

There are up to 16 private rooms on each floor. Some have shared bathrooms (two or three women per bathroom); some have semi-private bathrooms (private toilet and sink, but shared bathtub and shower), and a few rooms have completely private bathrooms. Community kitchens have two sinks, lockable cabinets, two stoves, two freezers, and two refrigerators. An additional locker for each resident is located in the lounge and hallway. Community lounges have comfortable furnishings and a television. Vending machines and coin-operated laundry machines are located in the basement.

Safety and Security

YWCA Madison has 24-hour staff coverage. Access to housing floors is limited to residents and their guests. Visiting hours for males are limited to certain evening and weekend hours. A security guard is on duty all night.

Rental Rates

Rent ranges from $460-$865, depending on the type of unit rented. A security deposit of one month’s rent is required.
