Join Us Wednesday, June 18, 2025, for Women of Distinction!

Since 1974, YWCA Madison has proudly honored more than 264 exceptional leaders as Women of Distinction. This annual celebration recognizes women in the Madison area whose community leadership, professional dedication, and lived values reflect YWCA Madison’s mission to eliminate racism and empower women.
The theme for YWCA Madison’s 2025 Women of Distinction is Community Keystones: Building Just Ecosystems for One Imperative.
This theme honors leaders in our local community who serve as foundational forces—keystones. Just as keystones hold an arch together and keystone species strengthen ecosystems through ripple effects that sustain the whole, our honorees exemplify a deep commitment to building communities where everyone can thrive.
“One Imperative” pays homage to beloved civil rights leader and YWCA ancestor Dr. Dorothy I. Height, who galvanized YWCA associations nationwide around a singular, unifying mission: to eliminate racism by any means necessary.
On the evening of Wednesday, June 18, we will unite to celebrate the ongoing legacies of transformation in Madison and honor the sustained efforts to advance YWCA’s One Imperative—our mission. We invite you to experience the power and vitality of intergenerational leadership in our community. Together, we will reflect on how each of us can live into the mutually flourishing ecosystems that we dream of, guided by the wisdom of our beloved community keystones.
We will be spotlighting the honorees on social media throughout the Week of May 19! Follow us to stay updated and to show your support for this incredible group of honorees.
If you are inspired to join our mission and deepen your impact, we invite you to make a gift in honor of Women of Distinction. Your gift is vital in supporting our work to eliminate racism and empower women.
“One Imperative — to eliminate racism, wherever it exists, by any means necessary”
As the president of the National Board in the 1970s, Dr. Dorothy I. Height helped unify YWCA associations nationwide around a call to action—naming it “The One Imperative.” This directive marked a turning point in YWCA’s history, explicitly centering racial justice as inseparable from its mission to empower women. It catalyzed deep internal work within the organization and positioned YWCA as one of the first national women’s organizations to formally commit to confronting structural racism.
